Three Flavours Dessert

Often known simply as Doce da Casa (“House Dessert”), this layered pudding is a cheerful and beloved treat in many Portuguese homes and casual restaurants. It’s a dessert that speaks of simplicity and fun, relying on store-cupboard staples to create something impressive with minimal effort. Its colourful layers of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry pudding make it an instant hit, especially with children.

The beauty of this dessert is its clever use of textures. The soft, creamy pudding layers are broken up by the crunch of crushed Marie biscuits and the chewiness of shredded coconut, all brought together with sweet, sticky caramel sauce. It’s a no-bake recipe that’s all about assembly, making it perfect for novice cooks or for when you need a crowd-pleasing dessert without turning on the oven.

This recipe is endlessly adaptable. You can use any combination of pudding flavours you like—caramel, butterscotch, or banana would also be delicious. For a slightly more adult twist, you could soak the Marie biscuits in a splash of coffee or a sweet liqueur instead of layering them dry. For a fresher note, add a layer of thinly sliced fresh fruit, like bananas or strawberries, between the puddings.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 packet vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 1 packet chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 1 packet strawberry instant pudding mix
  • Shredded coconut
  • Crushed Marie biscuits
  • 1.5 litres milk
  • Sugar (if required by pudding mix)
  • Store-bought liquid caramel sauce

Method

  1. Coat the bottom of a large glass bowl or trifle dish with a layer of caramel sauce.
  2. Prepare each pudding mix according to the packet instructions, typically using 500ml of milk per packet. Prepare them one at a time to allow for layering. Following the original recipe’s order: first, make the chocolate pudding. Let it cool slightly, then pour it into the dish over the caramel. Sprinkle a layer of shredded coconut on top and drizzle with more caramel. Next, prepare the strawberry pudding, pour it over the coconut layer, and top with a layer of crushed Marie biscuits. Finally, prepare the vanilla pudding and pour it over the biscuit layer. Finish with a mixture of shredded coconut and crushed biscuits on top.
  3. Decorate as desired and chill in the refrigerator for at least a few hours until firm. Serve cold.
