Tired of the same old tomato base? Let’s make pizza night a little more interesting with the English version of this recipe.

Broccoli White Pizza

For those who love cheesy, creamy flavours, this Broccoli White Pizza, or Pizza Bianca, is a fantastic departure from the traditional red-sauce base. It features a simple yet elegant garlic and cheese white sauce that creates a rich, savoury foundation. Topped with vibrant, tender broccoli florets and fresh tomato, it’s a balanced, flavourful, and utterly satisfying meal.

This recipe is incredibly versatile and serves as a great base for your own creations. The key is the homemade white sauce—a simple béchamel enriched with garlic and Italian cheeses. It’s much easier to make than it sounds and adds a wonderful depth of flavour. The broccoli is lightly steamed before going on the pizza, ensuring it’s perfectly tender-crisp rather than raw or overcooked.

Don’t hesitate to experiment with the toppings. A sprinkle of red pepper flakes in the sauce can add a gentle heat, or you could introduce other cheeses like ricotta or fontina for extra creaminess. For a bit more protein, grilled chicken or Italian sausage would also be delicious additions. This pizza is perfect for a cosy night in and is sure to become a new favourite.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of pre-made pizza dough (whole wheat works well)
  • 2 cups of broccoli florets
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Roma tomato, diced
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1/2 cup shredded Italian cheese blend
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Follow the instructions for the pizza dough on the packaging. (It will likely need some time to rest or prove).
  2. In a saucepan, heat 1 1/2 tbsp of butter over a medium-high heat. Add the flour and cook until golden. Add the minced garlic, salt, and pepper, then slowly whisk in the milk. Stir for about 4 minutes until the mixture begins to bubble and thicken. Remove from the heat and stir in 1/4 cup of the cheese until smooth.
  3. Next, melt the remaining 1/2 tbsp of butter in a frying pan over a medium heat and add the broccoli.
  4. After about 30 seconds, add 1/3 cup of water and cover the pan. Steam for about 3-4 minutes or until the broccoli is tender-crisp.
  5. Spread the white sauce evenly over the pizza dough and top with the steamed broccoli and diced tomatoes. Then, sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the top.
  6. Follow the pizza dough instructions for the correct baking time and oven temperature.
